Patriot’s Dream Green

Patriot’s Dream is a multifaceted company, and our approach to environmental stewardship is no different.  While going green may be the latest wave in corporate responsibility, we believe that every day gives us little opportunities to make a difference in the world around us.  From cleaning up to the full circle of the “reduce, reuse, recycle” motto, the old adage of waste not, want not lives on.

 Cleaning Up

Charlie and the kids have long been a part of the hunters who care cleanups.  They have recently been scheduled while he is due to be at the base, he and the kids take time to clean up the mess left behind by “bad visitors” whenever they are out.  A recycling bag and a garbage bag are always available in the truck, and when possible, usable items from the desert are donated after a thorough cleaning.  A bag goes with us on walks, and every little bit collected is one less chance for a wild animal or our land to have to suffer for the carelessness of others.

 Reduce

One of the simplest things we can do is to use less packaging or unnecessary throwaway items.  This includes packaging in the items we buy and sell, and unnecessary products which will end up in the landfill.  We also choose to eliminate the use of direct mail and paper coupons.  Any marketing from Patriot’s Dream comes in the form of opt-in email and internet marketing, and coupons are used via the internet.  Taking our own reusable water bottles with us enable us to keep healthy and not add to the burden in the landfill. 

 Reuse

Hand in hand with reducing the use of necessary products is the reuse of items whenever possible.  Composting, turning old mineral buckets into feed buckets, and using items which serve multiple purposes starts the process.  Old newspaper becomes packing material for shipments; butcher paper that comes in shipments is decorated for wrapping paper.  We also encourage our customers to help in the process.  Individual customers who pick up eggs at Patriot’s Dream receive 50 cents off for reusing egg cartons.  For lotion and bath products, if you return your bottles and jars to us, we will refill them with the product of the same scent and give you a $1.00 discount.  Water emptied from water buckets goes to keeping the compost bin moist, or provides a swimming area for the silly chickens.  Egg cartons which cannot be reused are turned into seed starters for the garden.

 Recycle

Cans, bottles, newspapers and cardboard are recycled.  The kids turn in cans to help with the cost of show entries or new equipment, like a new bow for archery or crate for livestock hauling. We shred old used paper and turn it into recycled paper stationery, envelopes, paper mache boxes and scrapbook paper.  Composting enables us to help nourish the gardens.

 Up-cycle

This is a relatively new term, but is worth mentioning.  This refers to taking a product which was previously meant for one purpose, and reworking it to give it a longer life.  We offer several such items in our product line, and use others still in our daily work.  Wooden boxes are stripped, sanded, painted and lined for use as jewelry boxes or hope chests.
